Introduction
Whether it be in the field of energy, the climate or health or in any other economic or social field, European decisions have an impact on the everyday life of millions of citizens. However, most of us have no idea of the organisational and decision-making processes of European institutions.
The EPMEC project (Education Populaire comme Méthode pour une Europe Citoyenne - Popular Education as a Method for a Citizens’ Europe) is the fruit of cooperation between five professional partners specialising in continuing education from four European countries whose aim it is to create a new approach to citizen participation in European issues by enhancing the social and civic skills of the working-class sectors.
This project was created thanks to funding from the European Commission within the framework of the lifelong education and training program (“Grundtvig”). The project lasted two years (from October 2009 to September 2011).
The European Citizen’s Kit is a new training instrument that is the key EPMEC initiative resulting from the work carried out by trainers aimed at increasing awareness among European citizens from the lower or working-class sectors of the idea “Europe cares about us. Let’s care about Europe”! For the partners involved in this process, the participation of working-class people in the exercise of citizenship is an essential element of democracy.
